In fact, many say these are the best and favorites amongst the locals. These five restaurants are listed in no particular order below. On such a short list we did have to leave out dozens of other tasty Mexican spots, so if we missed your favorite, let us know!  We are all about promoting top notch restaurants.

Chuy's Tacos Dorados

  • Rating: ★★★★★
  • $$$

1335 Willow St, Los Angeles, CA, 90013

Ok, Chuy’s might not be a proper restaurant, but it’s one of LA’s most popular street-food stalls. There’s nothing like Chuy’s for tacos dorados — those golden, thin and crispy deep-fried tacos. Order your tacos with different fillings, including cheese and potato, shredded beef or vegetarian. Burritos here are legendary as well, so order from Chuy’s, and you won’t be disappointed. This place dishes out authentic homemade refried beans and also has vegan options! What we love is that Chuy’s keeps it simple. No crazy complicated menu here, just 5 staple items and few fan favorites, plus something tasty for the kids. Carne Molida is drool worthy to say the least.

Lupita practically invented New Mexican food. This is an institution in LA for its straightforward and authentic Mexican street food. Try the crispy tacos dorados or for a heartier alternative — a burrito filled with chorizo, grilled meat or chicken. Did someone say fish tacos? Lupita has those too, and everything is fantastic, especially the spicy sauces. And don’t worry; they always serve the salsa on the side.

This gem in downtown LA is heaven for Mexican-loving foodies. The lively atmosphere and the young crowd really get you going while you wait for your meal. Visit Gavilan with friends and order the Party Tray: a bunch of meat, salsas and gallons of Aguas Frescas. This is what a party looks like.
