Ah! Mama Mia! Itsa Poppys Pizza and IMA SPEND SOME DOUGH! Quite easily one of the top pizza places in San Antonio thus far! Rollin' up in the later hours of the evening, really I was just looking to munch on some food on one of these rare cold nights that the city will have on occasion. A quaint little restaurant front, the plaza where Poppys is located wasn't in the least lacking in parking so I had no trouble finding a spot. Across the freeway from the shopping center, this is clever because it gets you away from the crowds but keeps you close enough to the action especially during the holidays! "NOT A CHAIN" per the hanging sign outside, that was a great indication of the type of potential this place was offering and had me stoked on the food. The night was quiet and walkin' inside, the room was filled with little subtle trinkets of an old school pizza parlor that just left me with a nostalgic feeling. The sounds of Sinatra danced around the venue, some college basketball playing low on one of their two televisions, and the smells of fresh dough and ingredients emanating from the kitchen were tantalizing and aromatically satisfying. These little things may not mean much individually, but when I close my eyes, I can imagine myself coming here for a late night conversation with pizza, some arcade game-playing, with either a friend or a romantic date. I sum it up as warm and homey! Is this how it felt back in the day? Because I'm diggin' it. I ordered the Hal's New York and it was satisfyingly delicious with a cheesy foundation and full layer of Italian sausage! The crust was thick and the body of each slice wasn't packed with dough, instead every bite was flavorful, obviously hand tossed and cooked right! What I took note of right away was how the pizza was layered; not a thick tomato sauce, more emphasis on the cheese and fresh ingredients. I enjoyed every foldable slice of pizza all to myself and for a great price! Bravo Poppys this was super tasty! The cashier was nice, helping me choose some of the more POPPY-lar selections and the wait was reasonable for the pizza. A word of advice, if you want it quicker, order ahead. It would have to be my only improvement I'd say. This makes sense because its made when you order and care is taken with each pizza, you'll see it when you open your box. They have some of those classic bar stools and attitude about their employees that just screams "we're here to make you pizza man, so watcha want?" And that's awesome. I'll definitely be coming back for more of the New York, New York pizza I crave!

Thirty eight minutes. It took 38 minutes to send out my 20' pizza. Was the restaurant busy: No Was there a large party ahead of me: No Were there a lot of call in orders: Was it frustrating: Yes Ok, now that that's out of the way... Poppys pizza was recently recognized by the SA express news readers choice for non chain pizza joint. Visited for dinner on a slow Thursday night. Menu is standard for a pizza place: pizza, salads, wings, couple appetizers, and desserts. I went with a 20 inch meat pizza priced right under $20. Added mushrooms for an add'l $2.50. The pizza was Yuge!!! Looked larger than 20 inches. It was heavily topped with pepperoni, sausage, beef, Canadian bacon, and mushrooms. The crust was sturdy enough to withhold all the toppings plus cheese. Big floppy slices took up 2 paper plates and plenty of napkins were used. Overall pizza flavor was standard. Good taste in each bite, but nothing spectacular. Simply put, a good neighborhood pizza joint. It was a little salty for my taste, but with that much processed meats, what do you expect? Haha The Greek salad was a solid salad. Plenty of feta, black olives, and tomatoes adorned the green romaine lettuce. Nice crunchy bites with a good flavor. Alas, my search for the best pizza in SA continues. Tried Poppys, now on the next one.

Another Door Dash delivery (I really need to lay off the Italian orders...and delivery in general). This time I tried Poppy's Pizza, and ordered their spaghetti and meatballs. It was a very late order, something I'm sort of ashamed of admitting. I tend to get cravings for something heavy at 9:00 at night, and my fingers develop a mind of their own as they scroll through the open options. Delivery was fast and my meal kept me company as I marathoned the rest of the latest season of Voltron. Prices were even better than my usual spots. $8.99 for a big plate of spaghetti and two giant meatballs? I feel like every time I try a new spot the prices get more and more competitive. The meatballs were fantastic. Two HUGE meatballs, cooked exactly how I like it. They held together nicely, weren't mushy, and had a subtle spice. (Mama mia! That'sa spicy meatball!) The spaghetti was also good. No dessert tonight, but that's okay. My only issue was the container. For something a bit messy like spaghetti, I think a more reliably sealed container would have been best. Some of the sauce seeped out and soiled my plastic bag. I had to double bag it when tossing out my trash. Poppy's Pizza will definitely be a place I'll consider ordering from again. Who knows? Maybe I'll stop by in person!
